It is predicted that the Next Generation Data Storage Market* will be worth more than $144 billion by 2022 at a CAGR of 16.76% between 2016 and 2022. This growth is driven by the increasing volume of data we are creating every day.
*Next Generation Storage Market includes NAS, DAS SAN, Software Defined, Cloud and Unified Storage.
NAS
Network-attached storage (NAS) is the second-largest market by size after DAS in the next-generation data storage market. NAS devices are designed to offer multi-client access to the same storage, allowing data to be shared between multiple users, both local and remote.
NAS devices offer vertical and horizontal scalability, as well as file & block data, multiple network interfaces and cross-client compatibility (including Windows and iOS). Such solutions are suitable in a wide range of data storage infrastructures, but are mostly used by enterprises where data security is of prime importance.
SAN
Storage Area Network solutions are performance-based solutions, storing data on a block-by-block basis. Available in single or dual controller, they offer flexible and affordable storage while maintaining data resilience and security.
DAS
Direct Attached Storage, also known as JBOD (Just-A-Bunch-Of-Disks), typically provides storage expansion for NAS, SAN and Server solutions. With support for both file and block data, DAS solutions are cost-effective and efficient in meeting growing data storage demands.
DAS is the oldest storage system and offers convenient data storage solution. DAS offers users a simple and low-cost solution compared to other storage solutions. Direct-attached storage (DAS) market held the largest size in 2015.
Tape
Tape solutions typically offer secure, archival data storage for organisations using them for backup and disaster recovery. The reliability of tape, in comparison to traditional disk storage, continues to make them ideal for long-term retention. In addition, regulatory changes such as GDPR, now makes it a legal requirement for organisations to store data indefinitely and securely.
The addition of LTO-8 technology in 2017 has helped to maintain the position of tape as a popular choice for backup and archival requirements. Uncompressed capacities now exceed 10TB per tape, and throughput figures are in excess of 350MB/s.
CMS offers a wide range of tape solutions, from single drives to large-scale integrated libraries, to meet multiple user requirements. For more information, please contact your CMS account manager.
